Capt. Ibrahim Mbiu Bendera

Biography

Capt. Ibrahim Bendera is a rare blend of master mariner and maritime lawyer, and serves as a Governor of the East Africa College of Business (appointed 2022, term to 2028). He began his career at sea in 1979, rising through the ranks to Master, with deck-officer training at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Training Unit and the Arab Maritime Training Academy in Alexandria, Egypt. He later read law, earning an LLB (Hons) from the Open University of Tanzania and an LLM in Maritime and Labour Law from the University of Dar es Salaam. An Advocate of the High Courts of both Tanzania and Zanzibar for roughly two decades, and a Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths, he is Executive Partner at Bendera & Co. Advocates and a part-time postgraduate lecturer in maritime law at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute. He is founder and Secretary General of the Maritime Law Association of Tanzania and author of the 560-page Admiralty and Maritime Law in Tanzania (2017).
